Oracle Virtualization migration project DBA (Oct 2009 - 15 Dec 2009)
Database Administrator
- The role was centered around the migration of a number of databases Oracle 8i/9i/SQL Server 20005 on varying hardware, which are all being migrated to Vmware ESXi virtualized cluster.
- Being traditional financial organization, Engage had number of processes struggling with performance issues. Worked to tune existing reporting procedures consuming more than 14 hours. After an upgrade, with right database statistics and indexes, I could drop the processing time from 14 hours to 40 minutes.
- Although my skills were mainly focused on traditional DBA tasks, I could be responsible for everything from the design, modeling, sizing and tuning of new elements to a database to advising on hardware, licensing issues and costs.
- Built number of 10g standalone/RAC databases on Windows platforms. Implemented Oracle RMAN, Data Guard disaster recovery procedures.
- I also took part in design workshops, advising on appropriate solutions surrounding the Oracle technology stack, and roadmap for the future. The environment necessitated the need to adhere to operational guidelines and security and ensuring database integrity, performance tuning, indexing, segmentation and database recovery; mentoring and developing other DBAs and liaising with support groups.
Environment: Oracle 8i/9i/10g RAC, Windows, Vmware ESXi, OEM, Data Guard, RAC, SQL Server 2005.

· Installed & maintained Oracle Spatial databases used to track assets
· Defined end to end support model using 10G Grid Control and Remedy Ticketing System. An alert raised from Grid would be logged into change management which in turn automatically raises a ticket and assigns it to relevant support parties. This change can then be tracked by DBAs and support teams for escalation, notes and to verify SLA targets. These alerts are regionalized and 24 X 7 support was provided by routing email and voicemail calls across UK, USA and Australia.

British Telecom PLC BTExact (bt.com), UK
Solutions Architect and Oracle & SQL Server DBA (Jan 2005 - Jan 2007)
Solutions Architect
- Worked as a Solutions Architect as part of the BT's ADSL/DSL flow stream team and designed the systems and databases to handle the challenges faced by BT in connection with sudden unanticipated business growth.
- Designed oracle spatial database systems to track mobile devices. The system was dependent on ability to locate parcels as it moves across different stages of the distribution network. An RFID system was used to locate movement of mobile devices based on Oracle Spatial.
- BT went a big way into market with groundbreaking ADSL/DSL/SDSL packages and the business exploded beyond anticipation and presented many challenges such as handling data uploads by third-party resellers, data security and performance issues. As a Solutions Architect designed the systems addressing these key issues and ensured a smooth business flow.
- Designed a system which provides much more functionality and flexibility than Oracle XML parser in handling XML data. The system was implemented by designing custom PLSQL XML parser with limited tag support.
- Designed a system to address the key issue of data security and provided a water tight security using Oracle HTTP Server and VeriSign digital certificates. The 2 way certificates guaranteed that client would only be able to connect if they have the signed certificates imported in their IE/Netscape browsers.
- The initial order handling system was not designed to cope up with the load of 15,000 orders/day as the business was not anticipated to grow in such a pace. The system was struggling and needed a expert review. Did a lot of database tuning to meet the performance demands and kept the system flowing 24 X 7. Suggested and carried out upgrade in terms of hardware where database tuning efforts failed to show any improvements due to software limitations and system load. Also improved the performance by splitting the databases vertically into separate applications on number of servers.
- Was also part of ADSL re-grade team which moved all BT ADSL circuits from 512 KBPS to 2 MBPS and later to 4 MBPS. Moved more than 5 million customers/year to new speed and new Alcatel ADSL exchanges. Worked and put forward a free source NAGIOS system monitoring for ADSL ports and used MRTG graphs for traffic shaping and to locate data flows between exchanges.

Oracle DBA and Developer (Oct 1999 - Dec 2000)
Database Administrator and Developer
- Involved in systems analysis, database design and development.
- Designed physical and logical database models using tools like S-Designer and Erwin.
- Created primary database storage structures and various database objects.
- Developed backup and recovery procedures for Oracle 7.3 and Sybase 11.0.
- Developed Oracle PL/SQL packages, stored procedures, functions and triggers.
- Migrated code segments from Sybase Release 11 to Oracle 7.X.
- Resolved the tricky and challenging issue related to application performance. The issue was with terrible response time offered by one of the packages used to provide inputs to electronic robots on an automated assembly line. The robots required response from Oracle in less than 1 second to pick up right IC/Resister/Capacitor and other components to make up production belt requirement. Decided to optimize the database as SAN storage was not up to the mark those days. It was oracle 7.3 database with rule based optimization. Took initial decision to add few indexes and made some improvement but that was not good enough. Researched and analyzed the problem and finally came up with the idea of caching the tables into oracle SGA and moving many tables into a PL/SQL array (memory structures) while processing. The response time improved significantly from few minutes to less than 100 Milliseconds. It was a great achievement and was highly appreciated by the management.
Environment: Oracle 7.3, Sybase 11.5, Solaris 8, HP Unix Release 11
Bombay Stock Exchange & TCS Share Transfer Limited (tatashare.com), India
(A leading provider of share transfer & registry services in India)
Oracle DBA and Developer (Jun 1996 - Sep 1998)
Database Administrator and Developer
- Worked as a DBA/Oracle Lead for 2 years in a very challenging environment, learnt many tricks and trades by practically resolving the real world database problems, gained a great experience which is relevant & useful even today and which proved to be a firm foundation for the knowledge gained during the entire career as a database expert.
- Worked in a team responsible for migrating the entire Honeywell Mainframe based systems to Oracle open systems. The environment was oracle 7.1 with Forms 3.0 on Novell NetWare 3.10. The system was migrated to Oracle 7.3/8.0 and Forms 4.0 and subsequently to Forms 4.5 with Novell NetWare 4.11 & NDS (Novell Directory Structure). They had initially 16 database servers which were reached to 30 by the time of my leaving the organization.
- Also worked with BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) through Tata Shares and was part of NSDL DMAT implementation team for electronic shares. Designed and developed Dividend Payment systems which would process data for tonnes of shareholders (about 20 million shareholders) and send them dividend cheques every 6 months.
- Resolved one of the tricky issues where Oracle couldn't manage the dot matrix printing feeds and often after 1000 cheques printing the figure would move outside the amount box on dividend vouchers which won't be accepted by banks. Developed a code in Pro*C and Oracle to make sure line feeds work well and cheques are printed absolutely spot on.
- When the system was migrated from mainframe, around 15-20% of shareholders' details went missing. Written scripts to cross verify the things with reference data supplied by mainframe vendor, a complicated data cleansing work which needed endless PL/SQL coding and writing PL/SQL procedures/triggers/packages which run well over 10,000 lines.
- Designed an automated standby database recovery system and designed central server under SCO Unix to monitor remote oracle databases 24 X 7 X 365.
- Gained a significant hands on knowledge working on various core DBA activities including server installation, database creation, backup/recovery, networking the Oracle database system, database and SQL performance tuning, user management, space monitoring and management, transaction management using rollback segments, security management using various authentication methods etc.
Environment: Oracle 8/7.3, Solaris, SCO Unix, Novell NetWare, SQL, PL/SQL, Pro*C.
